Support for Disadvantaged Students: The Graduate Tutor Project
This project was started at Redborne following a bid in March 2020 by Nikki Brennan to the Connolly Foundation. The bid was to pay salaries of graduate tutors in maths and English, who would then be deployed to schools across the county to offer one to one tuition to disadvantaged students, including those who cannot access full time education in school.
We have continued to fully manage and develop the graduate tutor programme to the model we have today. It has grown year on year and we now send over 20 graduate tutors to 12 schools in Central Beds and Luton to work on a one-to-one or small group basis with disadvantaged students. This is primarily to tutor in maths and English. The graduates receive a continuous programme of CPD, which is front loaded into the first term. All administration, management, monitoring and recruitment is provided by Redborne and it continues to be generously funded by the Connolly Foundation.
The graduate tutor programme continues to be an excellent way into teacher training and over the past 5 years, we have had 19 of our graduates start their teaching training. A fantastic recruitment rate.
ITT Provision
We work in partnership with the University of Bedfordshire as a teacher training provider: one of our colleagues is seconded to the university two days per week as their School Partnership Advisor.
We offer a highly developed and well regarded ITT professional development programme to trainees placed in our school and are pleased to offer support to other schools in this area.
We provide support for trainee teachers, leaders and other colleagues within the school setting by working in partnership. This includes making a contribution to initial teacher training, CPD and leadership development. This also means helping to identify potential school leaders at the beginning of their careers, and supporting them throughout their journey to fulfil their career ambitions.
This package allows us to make a contribution to the wider education system by working to create effective networks.
Data Support
Our data work with UTCs is supported by The Baker Dearing Trust and extends across the country.
Facility Hire
We provide facilities for the delivery of training (the Croft Centre) which is available for external hire.
